One of the main reasons parents set up their own home-based businesses is ostensibly so they can spend more time with their families and see more of their children. However, if you run your own business from home and you've got small children, you'll know how hard it is to try and combine the two. If it's not your baby screaming loudly while you're trying to talk to a client on the phone, it's your toddler smearing your laptop with sticky fingers as they try and 'help' you type. Here are a few ways you can try and make your work life and family life mesh a little better:
1. Use childcare! This might run completely contrary to the rose-tinted ideals you had when you first started up your business - after all, you became self-employed so you could spend more time with your children. But if you can arrange for a couple of hours of uninterrupted worktime every day, or even every few days, that means the time you do spend with your kids is going to be much more precious. There are a plethora of options, from childminders to nurseries, nannies, grandparents and other parents: whatever suits your budget and your own preferences.
2. Assign non-time-sensitive tasks to the evenings when you're children are asleep: things like marketing, social media updates and so forth can be done at anti-social hours.
3. Use a call answering service or a virtual assistant for day to day customer care and service.
4. If you have very young babies, don't try to do too much. They grow so fast - make the most of this time together. For slightly older babies, try working during their naps, use a sling and learn to type one handed while breast-feeding!

Finally, though, accept that you can't do everything at once. Your children won't be tiny for long and this time really does go in a flash. Yes, your business might grow more slowly than you'd like but if you continue to put a little bit of time and effort into it, it will grow and as you begin to get more time to yourself, you can increase your efforts. Clients come and go, and businesses can be built back up again from nothing, so relax and enjoy this special time while you can.

Decide on the Business Type
You will have to decide what type of small home business you want to have. Do you want to sell your services? Do you want an online business? Do you want to sell products? Having an income that can sustain your life and your business for one to two years is the safest bet. Stick to your budget for your business because if the money runs out before the business is successful, you will be back at square one.
Create a Business Plan
Remember the old saying "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail." Unless you are going to try to get a business loan, you do not need to do a detailed business plan with complicated numbers. But no matter how tiny you plan for your small home business to be, you need to have a plan. If you are going to do an online business, you will need to create a plan for whatever market you are going into. Do some research to see how competitive the market is. Decide on how you are going to get traffic to your website and learn how to get that traffic effectively with the method you have chosen. Decide on how you will be unique in the market. Do some research to create a list of what you need to know to be successful in your small home business. Create goals for your business and set tasks for yourself to complete for your business every day. Revisit this plan and revise it as you learn more about your market.

I established my business slowly, spending money only on the things I could afford out of my discretionary money each month.
So what do you need to do to launch, brand and market a successful online or small business on a shoestring budget?
Register your business name to ensure that no-one else can operate under that name (in Australia this costs less than $200).
Register your domain name and web hosting ($100 per year), this will enable you to set-up emails at your company domain and host a website at your business domain address. This looks far more professional than 3rd party email or website provider.
Decide on your brand image and obtain an effective Logo - You could pay thousands of dollars for logo design work, however, companies such as Logo Chief can provide you with a professional, customised logo design suited to your brand for as little as $49.
Set-up a website - The best low cost solution is WordPress, a free website content management system that allows you to update the website content. This will save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. It is advisable to purchase a premium website theme from companies such as Theme Forest with built in functionality that can then be customised to suit your branding ($20-40).
Purchase online Word Press training - A professional looking website is critical for an online business's success so I highly recommend investing in an online training program (including recommended plug-ins and widgets to obtain desired functionality and search engine optimisation or SEO). For a professional look purchase high resolution images from a stock photography business such as photodune ($1 per image) these can be used on your website and any other print and graphic design projects.
Design and purchase business cards consistent with your branding from an online company such as vista print or zazzle ($30) so that you have a summary of contact details when networking and marketing your business in the real world!
Set-up social media accounts under your business name with Facebook and Twitter and consider extending this to LinkedIn and Google+. Ensure that your branding is consistent across all of these social media platforms and connect with other companies that have a similar audience. Invite your personal and professional networks to connect with your business via these platforms and ask them to recommend to their networks where relevant. Keep your personal social networking platforms just that for personal use!
Set up a blog and write concise and relevant information to your target audience and issue this on a consistent basis (weekly or monthly). Repurpose these documents and submit to other websites or blogs that serve a similar audience and to online article websites such as EzineArticles. By having other websites link back to yours you will get significantly better results in Google searches and drive traffic to your site.
Consider some cost per click advertising and set a low budget ($25 per month) with Facebook or Google AdWords.
As a final tip, sign up for as many reputable business newsletters providing free tips and resources in online marketing, branding, social media networking and search engine optimisation (SEO). In the online age there is so much to master and many businesses provide enough free content to allow you to be successful without blowing your start-up budget.
